Studying Online with Northumbria University London

An online degree from a recognised university is a degree like any other. Upon graduation, you’ll gain a recognised academic qualification just as you would from an on-campus degree programme.

The difference is that all classes and workshops are delivered entirely online without the need to attend in-person.

Our online degree programmes at Northumbria University London are delivered through a blend of online and distance learning methods. This approach provides the same benefits as in-person degree programmes, but with the flexibility and freedom of distance learning. You benefit from less added costs like travelling to campus or securing accommodation nearby.

The terms ‘distance learning’ and ‘online learning’ are often used interchangeably. However, there are some differences between the two:

Online learning

  • Usually delivered entirely online using digital textbooks and multimedia resources, e-learning materials and modules, and digital assignments.
  • Tends to contain more ‘live’ interactions with real-time discussions, such as online lectures; virtual classrooms; and online workshops, alongside online learning platforms like ‘Blackboard’ and digital group forums.
  • Normally requires consistent access to the internet whenever a student is completing elements of the programme.

Distance learning

  • Can include offline learning material, such as physical textbooks.
  • Includes more pre-recorded video content with access to a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), providing 24/7 access to digital learning materials. This allows for more self-paced, individual study.
  • Also includes offline learning elements, such as self-paced study. A reliable internet connection is required to access digital materials, attend live sessions, digital interactions, or for submitting coursework online.

If the degree is offered by an accredited institution or provider, like Northumbria University, then online degrees are recognised degrees.

An online Masters degree from Northumbria University London is a recognised degree. Our online course content is virtually the same as our in-person content. The only differences are minor variations to enable them to be delivered online. You graduate with the same skills and knowledge as those who study on campus.

Our MSc Cyber Security (Online) degree has the same certification from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC, part of GCHQ) as our in-person version. This marks it as one of the best cyber security degrees in the UK.

  • A flexible method of learning if you want to study at your convenience and in an environment of your choice
  • The ability to fit degree study around existing commitments including family, work, and other responsibilities
  • The opportunity to study online removes the need for relocation or travel during your studies
  • An online degree is more affordable. While net costs like tuition fees and books may be the same as an in-person degree, the overall cost is lower. Accommodation, living, and travel costs are removed or significantly reduced
