New online degrees launched by Northumbria University London

Make a difference in cyber security with our new degrees 

Skilled cyber security professionals are in great demand, now more than ever. 

Cyber criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and cybercrime is becoming more widespread. As a result, cyber security is now one of the biggest concerns for organisations around the world. UK businesses experienced over 7.7 million cybercrimes last year, with over 70% of medium to large businesses reporting a cyber security breach or attack (Gov UK, 2024). 

To help meet this demand and empower students to enter or progress in the cyber security industry, we’ve launched our new online distance learning portfolio with two cyber security programmes. 

For those with cyber security qualifications or experience: MSc Cyber Security (Online) 

Aimed at existing cyber security professionals and those with related experience, our MSc Cyber Security (Online) programme is designed to help advance your cyber security career.   

Recognising it as amongst the best cyber security degrees in the UK, our MSc Cyber Security (Online) programme has also received official certification from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of GCHQ.  

As part of the programme, students will be able “to specialise and learn how to conduct state-of-the-art research in cyber security” according to Professor Hamid Jahankhani, Cyber Programme Leader.  

The programme will cover:  

• Information governance and security  
• Network security, including wireless networks  
• Information assurance and risk management  
• Ethical hacking for cyber security  
• Research and project management  

You will work on real-life scenarios and case studies, and learn and practice technical cyber security skills such as:  

• Ethical hacking and penetration testing  
• Local exploits and attacks  
• Web application security testing  
• Linux exploitation and privilege escalation

For those new to cyber security: MSc Cyber Security Technology (Online) 

Aimed at anyone interested in starting a career in cyber security, our MSc Cyber Security Technology (Online) programme is designed to improve and deepen your knowledge in cyber security, related technologies, and wider digital technology and leadership subjects.  

If you don’t have an existing degree in a related field or any prior experience or qualifications directly related to cyber security but would like to start a career in cyber security, this course would be the best online degree for you.  

This online Masters degree will cover areas such as:  

• Information governance and cyber security  
• Leadership in the digital age  
• Big data and cloud security  
• Computer security  
• Computer networks and security  
• Contemporary computing and digital technologies  

You will work on real-life scenarios and case studies, and take part in interactive tasks and experiential activities, such as hackathons, bootcamps, competitions, and conferences.
